Celebrating Women in EdTech at BETT UK 2026

EdTech 10 List

In January 2026 BETT UK is launching the EdTech10 list. The annual competition recognises women who have made a significant contribution to education in their community using technology. It is an opportunity to celebrate their individual success stories and encourage other women to get involved.

BETT Women in EdTech - BETT UK is proud to champion the voices of women driving change in education. Our Women in EdTech initiatives spotlight innovation, build community and inspire the next generation of female leaders. Discover how we're celebrating the impact of women shaping the future of EdTech.

We were absolutely delighted to hear that our own Head of CENMAC (located at Charlton Park Academy) Kathryn Stowell, was nominated and has been selected as one of the 2026 EdTech 10 Finalists.

Award Nomination

Kathryn was nominated by Gosia M. Kwiatkowska, FHEA, Director, Associate Professor of Rix Inclusive Research Institute at the University of East London. Gosia’s research at the Rix explores new opportunities presented by the rapidly changing digital world to improve the lives of people with special needs. Their findings are then used to create practical tools and resources.

Gosia said “I nominated Kathryn for the Women in EdTech Award because she is an extraordinary force for inclusion and innovation. Kathryn dedicates every waking moment to her mission of ensuring that assistive technology truly serves those with complex needs. She works tirelessly to identify, test, and deploy assistive technologies, often in her own time, during evenings and weekends, driven by an unwavering commitment to improving students’ lives. She collaborates closely with providers and partners, shaping tools that are not only functional but transformative. Her energy, determination, and huge heart inspire everyone around her. Kathryn embodies the true spirit of EdTech where compassion meets creativity, and innovation serves humanity.”

Rix Wiki Project

Kathryn has collaborated with the Rix centre on various projects – one being the use of the Rix Wiki, which is a self-advocacy tool helping individuals to organise their thoughts, and share their views and push for change in reshaping communities.

Raising Aspirations with Assistive Technology

On a day-to-day basis Kathryn is the Head of CENMAC, a service supporting children and young people experiencing barriers to learning to access the curriculum and/or to communicate. Kathryn works with a wide range of assistive technology companies to discover existing and new technologies that the service can use to support children and young people.

Annual Event Communication Works

Kathryn shares her expertise via our annual conference Communication Works a celebration of assistive technology in education.

It is an opportunity for some of the children and young people we support to be involved and demonstrate to the audience how they benefit from the technology.

The exhibition space provides our visitors with a great opportunity to see the latest innovations in assistive technology.

DfE Assistive Technology Lending Libraries Pilot Scheme

CENMAC recently won the contract to advise the UK government on the setup of new assistive technology loan libraries around the country. These hubs will increase access to learning and communication by loaning assistive technology to children and young people who might otherwise not receive the support they need.

Kathryn has a passion for assistive technology and is always looking at new technologies constantly being developed by real innovators.

CENMAC is based at Charlton Park Academy which has become an active learning hub for assistive technology. Much of the technology is used at Charlton Park Academy and visitors come from far and wide to see how the technology benefits the students at the Academy.
