How to live audAACiously
The ultimate lived experience guide to AAC
Beth Moulam is an AAC advocate, a Paralympian, an inspirational speaker and is about to become a published author with her new book How to live audAACiously: The ultimate lived experience guide to AAC publishing in November.
Student Voice Lead Khamani sat down with Beth to find out what it means to live audaciously, the importance of using different communication methods and how self-advocacy can help AAC users navigate life’s opportunities and challenges.
What does living audAACiously mean?
Audacious means being willing to take bold risks and approach life with courage. But what does “living audAACiously” mean in practice? Beth describes how she treats every day as an adventure as a positive way of tackling the challenges that every day life brings.
The power of multimodal communication
The cover of Beth’s book features a range of communication methods, including power-based AAC, communication boards, switches and print. Beth shares why having access to different ways to communicate matters and how we are all multimodal communicators using body language, facial expressions and eye movements to support our language.
Sharing your own story
Beth tells how she was inspired to write her own life story at the age of 10 after watching the television character Tracy Beaker. Tracy grows up in care and is encouraged to write about her experiences to help shape her journey, find her voice and develop self-advocacy skills.
Why self-advocacy matters
Being able to express your views, communicate your needs and have a say in decisions that affect your life is essential. They discuss why self-advocacy is particularly important for AAC users and how people can be supported to speak up for themselves, in whatever way works best for them.
Practical tips for AAC users
How to live audAACiously is packed with practical hints, tips and hacks for AAC users. We find out more about the advice readers can expect to discover and how small, practical changes can make communication more accessible in everyday life.
Everyone can be a communication partner
Communication is a two-way process, and everyone has a role to play in making it successful. We discuss what makes a great communication partner and how patience, understanding and a willingness to listen can help AAC users feel heard, respected and included.
Navigating the transition to adulthood
Moving into adulthood brings new experiences, opportunities and challenges. Beth shares some of the particular challenges she faced as an AAC user during this transition, from communicating with unfamiliar people to accessing support and having greater control over decisions about her future.
What comes next?
As a Paralympian, AAC advocate, inspirational speaker and published author, Beth has already achieved so much. With a Doctor of Health and a Master of Research in Social Policy also among her qualifications, Khamani ends his interview with Beth by asking what comes next on her remarkable journey.
