Socks and Pics, World Down Syndrome Day

Socks and Pics by Mary Long (CENMAC Deputy Team Leader)

Welcome back to the first blog of the final term of this academic year! We can’t quite believe how quickly this year has rushed by, and that we are now in the final part of preparations for transition for many of our students.

We have two exciting new competitions to share with you this week, and if you like fancy footwear and/or flourish in photography, then these are for you!

The first competition is to design the socks for next year’s World Down Syndrome Day (which is in March 2023). Every year Down Syndrome International design the socks for the #LotsofSocks theme. This year they are throwing down the gauntlet (or the socks!) and asking for new designs from a member of the global Down Syndrome community.

This year’s winner was a very flash design which you can purchase from the official website https://lotsofsocks.worlddownsyndromeday.org/

To enter the competition, and win your own pair of socks, download the template, and then either use a computer to create your image or print it out and design by hand. If you print the template, you will need to take a photo of your finished socks to upload for the competition. Closing date for submissions is 28th June.

The second is a photographic competition run by the Down’s Syndrome Association and open for people all around the world with Down syndrome to enter. Entrants can submit up to three photos from five different categories:

  • Landscape – the world around you,
  • Portrait – a person or people,
  • Abstract – anything you like,
  • Wildlife – an animal or animals,
  • My life during COVID.

To find out more and to enter, visit https://www.downs-syndrome.org.uk/our-work/our-voice/my-perspective/ Closing date is 1st July.

There was no competition last year, but here are some words from the 2020 winners, Natalie, Conor and Houston.

Don’t forget you can share your CENMAC experiences for our CENMAC family to enjoy.
