AAC Chat Group

Here at CENMAC we often support pupils who are just starting out with AAC – Augmentative and Alternative Communication systems. We meet and work with a number of pupils both within mainstream and special education who can find their access to role models and peers using AAC can be very limited.

Abdi Omar has been running an AAC chat group for both those just starting out with AAC and for those who are at a higher level of communication. Abdi, who is a talented speaker, is also an excellent teacher who can engage students of all levels and abilities. We have been impressed with the conversation which evolves from his sessions. The pupils are always fully engaged, and we find ourselves adding additional vocabulary to support their progress. When the pandemic happened, we were unsure about how well this group would be able to continue online. However, with Abdi’s positivity and enthusiasm we decided to meet online, and the success surprised us all. The students have not only increased their digital skills but found this way of meeting just as engaging and fun. We are looking forward to extending this group even further and encouraging the pupils to sign up to Abdi’s weekend club.

We are thrilled we have Abdi on our team, providing such a brilliant role model and teacher to our students.
